Final Blog Entry

This is the final entry I will make on my blog. I have been in hospital for four weeks so far with two very nasty infections, the second of which is an infected mouth. This has stopped me being able eat anything and gave me such excruciating pain that I have decided I cannot take any more. The anti-biotics have been effective only the extent of minimising the infections but are unable to get rid of them. The best efforts of combining Revlimid with Rituxamab and donor white blood cells has been unable to get my bone marrow functioning. Consequently I have asked to be transferred as soon as possible to our local Hospice, where I will see out my last days comfortably and pain free.

After my September period in hospital with a seriously infected chest, I had five weeks in which I recovered from that experience. Unfortunately, Tina and I caught colds in the fifth week which resulted in my being back in hospital for another three weeks with infected sinuses. I was discharged on Sunday 23rd November only to be back in two days later on the Tuesday with my current problems. The thing about CLL is that it does not itself kill you, it is that infections eventually do that job.

I want to thank my darling wife, Tina, who has been the most wonderful support to me, not only through these recent tough weeks and years, but throughout our 41 years of life together. I also want to pay tribute to the support given to both of us by our two lovely children, Anna and Matthew and their respective families and all our relatives and friends who followed the ups and downs of these past six years since I was first diagnosed.

Roland, I met Tim the other day and he told me of your situation. I am so sorry that I didn't know before. We had great times together at Crawley and I remember you fondly. My thoughts are with you.

I have edited this post after reading Tom Mockford's post.

I am so sorry to read Roland's last post.
His disposition has been, and will continue to be an inspiration to me and my family, as we go through our own CLL journey with my husband.
My thoughts are with Roland's family at this desperately sad time.
I would like to thank him for what he has given us in his blog - the strength to live each day with optimism, and to face each obstacle as it comes. We are going to do SO much during my husband's remission (fingers crossed).
May God Bless you all.
I shall be thinking of you.
Love
Jackie x

I think you were very brave

From Sussex Police magazine Patrol

A FORMER PC and police staff
member who was well known for his
work within community safety has died.
Roland Mockford, aged 65, passed
away at the beginning of January after
a long battle with cancer.
Paying tribute to him, North Downs
Divisional Commander C/Supt Wayne
Jones said: “Roland was a credit to
Sussex in the many roles he fulfilled.
He will be significantly remembered for
his work within community safety, firstly
as a police officer and then after his
retirement as a member of police staff.
“He was a very special person,
always keen to stop and chat and show
a genuine interest. He was positive
right to his last days. I followed his blog
and was amazed by his determination
and his attention to detail.
“He will be missed by many friends
and my thoughts are very much with his
wife Tina and his children Anna and
Matthew.”

I had not read Roland's blog before, until now, he must have been a wonderful person to know and I feel sad for his lost and thank that he left a diary of his journey for us to learn from his experiences.
I have often thought how much more painful it is to lose a love one than being the one that departs.
My thoughts are very much with his family

I have just read Roland's blog, and been very touched. I am glad that he was the person he was, and wrote the things he wrote. I hope his family are managing to adjust to the loss.
